It's raining babies

01.21.2003

I just got an email from my friends Jani and André Mund. Their first son, Lukas was born 12 January. He's healthy and loved in The Hague, where Jani and André now live. They met in Berlin, though André is Portuguese (Jani is part Czech), then moved to Kalamazoo for grad school together, then to Arizona, and now they live in The Hague, Netherlands. Talk about a cosmopolitan family! I love both of them dearly (I haven't met Lukas yet and reserve my judgement).

Bay Jo also has a new baby. Well, not hers, but her sister's (no name currently). But as crazy as Bay Jo is about babies, it might as well be hers.

I'm at the age where I'm surrounded by people having babies. Personally, I don't like babies much (they're not even cute, really). They're like high-maintenance puppies (and I'm a cat person). I love toddlers, once they start talking and doing things. But not babies. I fantasize about having full-service maids take care of my children until age three or so and then being introduced to them: "Hi there, [insert name here], I'm your dad!"

I forgot to mention that Mark is also having a baby any day now. So many babies.

Yeah, my Dad keeps telling me that I'll change my tune once I have kids of my own. That may well be true, my brother Sam wasn't really into babies until he had one.

I feel like that too. Babies freak me out; I don't want to drop one. Also I think that many babies and kids are annoying, but mine (even though they are nonexistent at this point) are cool.

I think that you and my sister Gig should have a time-share baby. She only likes them when they are infants. At the age of four she would turn it over to you.

It's a good fantasy, but the problem with having maids taking care of your babies until 3 is there's a good chance they won't recognise you as their "dad".

And puppies are cute!! There's nothing in the world than having 20 dogs and puppies playing tag with you in the garden... with you as "tag". You want to get rid of rat problem in the house? How about all 20 dogs from the wolfish Alaskans to itsy-bitsy pekinese sending the rodent off from the kitchen to the front gate?

Cats are in class of their own. At times, having a cat is like having no pet at all.
