The union, state of

Few will deny that Bush isn't very eloquent. The state-of-the-union was no exception. He stumbled around a few times, but at least most of his grammar was on par.

There's tons of punditry, analysis, and retort on the speech online. So I'll just (briefly) add my two cents:

  • It seems Social Security is on the chopping block. Not sure how I feel about that (but since I know it won't be around when I need it, I've stopped contributing).
  • I like tax cuts. I look forward to my share.
  • Helping Africa w/ its AIDS epidemic is a great idea.
  • Bush II's "Freedom Corps" seemed like a surreal blend of Bush I's "Points of Light" and Clinton's "Americorps". Still, helping needy people w/ volunteer programs always sounds great and very á la Camelot.
  • Bush was a bit too religiousy for my taste.
  • He shouldn't have talked about Iran the way he did; it was counter-productive.
  • The case against Iraq was better laid out than previously, but still not convincingly enough. He specifically should've talked about what comes after military action.

did he mention Iran again? Rediculous- I thought he learned the meaning of "backfire" a year ago. Did he expand the axis of evil to include russia, china and sweden?

No, the axis of evil hasn't expanded to include Russia, China, or Sweden(?). But ... some we might want to expand it to include: Algeria, Saudi Arabia, the PLO. And don't forget the so-called "axis of weasels" of France and Germany. I say we go after France next.
