Costly mistakes

02.21.2003

Poker night was miserable. And not just because I lost $8. The evening started OK. Then, a few hands into it, Chris won a huge pot at 7/27.

In case you don't know that game, it's like Blackjack (or "21"), except that it's more complicated -- and not just because you try to get closest to 7 or 27 (you can also go over). Players go low (7) or high (27). Two winners split the pot. The game encourages high betting -- and you bet often. There's only one way to win the entire pot: a three-card hand of two aces and a five.

Chris was showing two aces. His face-down card was a five. He took the entire pot -- over a dozen bucks. Three hands later, he cashed out, went home. I didn't have a chance to win my money back. No one did. Not very sporting.

I almost broke even for the night, until a huge mistake. I placed a bet out of order. I had to match the pot as punishment. We were playing 7/27 again, so that was about $5. Since only three of us were playing at that point, I had to keep betting high (I had a really good hand) to make sure to at least win something out of that pot (John and I were going high, Dan was going low).

John beat me. By a slim margin. I threw my plastic chair across the room, followed by a bag of donut holes. That was pretty much it.

For the record, I wasn't really mad. It's just fun to throw stuff. We played poker at Dan's soon-to-open moped shop, which is full of shitty furniture and other assorted construction-zone items. So we get to throw things around when we loose big hands. It makes our testosterone-driven boys-only poker nights more fun. Dan smashed a bottle against the wall.

Poker poker, I got taken last week on Poker night.. We used quaters and Dimes, but I still ended up losing $3.5. I need to work on my poker face. I think it's a good thing, keeps me away from the casinos!
