Irish eyes are smilin'

Happy Saint Paddy's Day! I've always loved this holiday; I can't quite explain why. Mainly, I love all ethnic festivals and relish the opportunity to remake myself for a day. I've no intrinsic nationality - and I refuse to be told I must. Today, I'm Irish, dammit!

So go out to the pub w/ your favorite mates and drink a Guinness. Oh, here's a crazy link I found - an article from St. Anthony Messenger detailing the positive aspects of Celtic spirituality.

May the Lord keep you in his hand and never close his fist too tight

Hmmm, I've always liked the fact that St. Patty's day was designed to celebrate Irish heritage (I am, afterall, Irish), but this being my first year in Chicago my opinion has changed a bit. Chicago is an Irish town (face it, we own the place) but St. Patty's celebrations are a bit out of hand. It's all about drinking for 4 days straight! The Irish have more to them that their alcoholism. There's been a bit of an uproar about the south side Irish parade- they decided this year to not allow public drinking or drunkenness. They've employed true Patty-wagons and upped the poliece presence. People are upset about it. I say, just drink your pints in the bar and when you're finished, go outside and watch the parade.

I must say, it's nice to see all the dark haired, pale skinned boys w/ freckles wearing green.
