Tendido como un arco el alma tuve

09.27.2003

This looks to be a good weekend. Last night I went out w/ Daniel & Sylvia to a little boliche called La Caldera de la Bruja (The Witches' Pot) to hear Sylvia's nephew play guitar and sing. And to make Sam & Andy jealous ... tonight, I might go see Octavia play at the Equinoccio.

Post-show

Oh, the show was great. I've always liked the Equinoccio. It's where the Bolivian "scenesters" hang out (ah! the girl in the blue shirt). Except w/o the vaguely disinterested head nod. Everyone jumps, and shouts, and sings along to songs they all know. And I love the way Octavia blends indie rock grit w/ Bolivian folkloric instruments and melodies. Watching a crowd turn from a standard punk rock jerk-n-shuffle to a cueca, complete w/ hankerchiefs in the air, is impressive.

Another thing to keep in mind, too, is that Bolivian shows start late. Real late. Octavia (there was no opening band) didn't start playing 'till past midnight. They played their last encore sometime around 3:30 am.
