Slow weekend

10.27.2003

Despite going out a lot, this was a rather slow weekend. On Friday, I went out for spectacular sushi at Wagamama. We were an motley group, including a Canadian, an Andalusian, two Paceños, a gringo, and myself. But we passed the evening enjoying warm sake, octopuss, and various sushi platters.

Later, everyone wanted to go out to a disco. It's not really my thing, but I figured I'd give it a shot. We ended up at Bizaro, a trendy techno & hip hop club. The music wasn't so bad, though it wasn't worth the 30 Bs. cover. The place slowly started filling up around 1am, along w/ a Unitel camera crew and barely dressed video hostess. That's exactly why I hate discos: People don't go to have fun, they go to be seen. I went home shortly after that.

I didn't get to sleep in Saturday, courtesy of the construction crew hammering away upstairs from me. But I lunched w/ tía Theresa, and spent most of the afternoon in San Miguel.

Met up w/ Daniel & Sergio at night, and went out for a beer at Diesel in Sopocachi. The place is tastefully decorated entirely w/ junkyard metal, giving it a very gritty (and yet oddly smooth) "Mad Max" style. There's even a giant airplane engine mounted on the front wall. And they have great quesadillas.

I didn't get to sleep in Sunday, either. My 73-year-old tío Juan called at 8:15 (why don't old people sleep in?) to remind me to come over to his house in Alto Irpavi for lunch. At least the construction crew took its first day off in a month, so I went back to sleep (lunch wasn't until 2pm).

Met up w/ Daniel, Sylvia (wife), and Luciana (daughter) for coffee at Fridolin (in San Miguel). We called Sergio over, since we also wanted to discuss the crêperie & café we want to open in Sopocachi.

And that was it. This week's gonna be short in La Paz, so I hope to get lots of work done. I'm traveling to Santa Cruz on Wednesday night and will spend a long weekend (Monday's a holiday). I can't wait to eat sonso & majao tapao & humintas & pan de arroz & alfajores the size of your hand & so many other things. Camba food's so much better than kolla food (have I mentioned how much I hate soup?)

Partly true. I don't understand why the "butt dance" or the "sandwich" dance are so popular in clubs. They're so lame after a while. Well, I hardly get asked to dance in the clubs anyway, since I'm usually jumping and prancing about taking a lot of space. =P

And that's what I enjoy abt rave/electronic music. You get encaptured by the beats since they're so infectious. You dance alone. And ravers sorta have to respect your space. You're within a community of isolationists, lost in tehir own euphoria. It's fucking cool!

sometimes it is nice to have a laid back, somewhat uneventful weekend. The airline has changed my flights already, different times on my return. I am worried they will cancel my flight, and I will not get to enjoy Camba or Kolla food!

The sad thing about much of Bolivian night life is that young, upper class kids think they're in Miami. They're not. But they think they are. So it's all about being seen, w/ their trendy clothes. Of coures, they end up looking like American parodies. But they don't know that.

I'd really rather go to a peña and listen to folk music.

Um, Miguel? That's "Mötley Crüe", not motley group! Straighten up and fly right.

Glad things are well there. Silly college students.

Love,
Micah
