Thanksgiven

Spent my first Thanksgiving w/o family w/ some fellow yanks at their apartment in Sopocachi. I brought my camera, but the candlelight made for some very not-good pictures. Nevertheless, the food was great, especially the stuffing (w/ walnuts), and the home-made mashed potatoes. Several paceņos also showed up, and we had many interesting food-related conversations, such as the quest to find Spanish translations for all the myriad types of berries in existence. Paola came along, and had a good time. Although we had to leave early since dinner didn't start until 10ish, and Friday was another workday.

On a tangent, I've decided to invest in remodeling my apartment. I'll try to keep the cost as low as possible, but my place really needs it. Either that, or I might just move. Probably to Sopocachi.

Also, my Christmas card list now tops 35 addresses. So I've sent about 1/3 of my cards out as of today; it takes time to write short notes into the cards for everyone. But they're on their way. Speaking of the post office ... I'm irritated by this:

I was paying for my stamps, when two foreigners walked up to the counter next to me, asking about mailing a package. They had trouble w/ Spanish, but were holding their own. The woman who was taking care of me and said, "Those Israelis are all so terrible, they're like flies." All this for what? Because they had trouble communicating in a foreign language? I was incensed. I turned to her and said, "By the way, I'm also Israeli." She just stopped, and turned away to count my change. I didn't say thank you.

Reminds me of the American from the Real World on MTV being in France, meeting a German girl who only spoke fluent German and french ... and his remarks were: "she doesn't speak English very well" (yet she could keep up a conversation).

Yeah, maybe some Chileans will take advantage and invade his house, depriving him of access to his bathtub.
