Beer at midday

12.04.2003

Today I tried a new drink. On my way to the Vicepresidency, I stopped at the fresh juice stand in Mercado Camacho. Instead of the supervitaminico I tend to order (a delicious mix of various fruits, carrots, brazil nuts, quinoa, and oatmeal), I asked for the batido de bi-cervecina. My life-long vegetarian casera (who chided me for having disappeared for a few days) highly recommends it. It wasn't too bad. What is it? Well, it's a raw egg mixed in a blender w/ malt beer and a bit of sugar. Apparently, malt beer has tons of vitamins.

As a kid we used to make "Egg Shakes" which consist of milk, a couple of raw eggs, and ice cream. It sounds terrible, but it is very rich, filling, tasty and high in protein. There is nothing odd about the way they taste...they do not taste like egg at all. Mmmmm...i miss egg shakes.

Is the malt beer what we would call a "malta?" When I was a kid we would mix malta with leche condensada. Sweet, rich and majorly filling.

Malt o lo que se llama tambien cerveza negra, ese batido es lo que tu abuelita le daba a tu mama cuando estaba enbarazada, ya que muy rico en vitaminas.

Dad just commented that mom drank these malt beer shakes while pregnant w/ me. That might explain some of my crazyness.

But, yeah, you can't taste the egg. Actually, the supervitaminico usually also has egg in it, too.

Dad was referring to Malta, which does not have alcohol in it, at least I do not think so. I know Puerto Ricans that drink a lot of it, real dark with a strange taste. I guess it grows on you after a while.

You were literally brought up on that type of malt drink. As a pregnant and later a nursing mother I drank just such a drink - high in proteins and the malt beer was a calming drink - just enough alcohol to relax a mother before nursing. Thanks to Abuela Centellas. Between malt alcohol and eating liver I did all I could to benefit my children during pregnancy.

Oh, I'm sure you were a great nursing mom. No doubt about that. Still can't get my head around the beer & egg combination. Guess I've adopted my American prejudices. But, truthfully, it wasn't bad. Not delicious, but not bad.
