Afternoon in the park (& some news)

12.23.2003

Went to the park w/ the Plaza 24 de Septiembre w/ Sam & the abuelitos after lunch. Abuelito had to pay the phone bill, so the rest of us sat on a park bench, waiting. I bought a Santa Cruz newspaper (La Nación).

The heads of the comites cívicos of Tarija & Santa Cruz (Roberto Ruiz & Rubén Costas) made the front page. They're upset at the apparent collapse of the gas & oil industry, following October. The headline read: "Cainco propone dividir en dos al país." At the very least, they propose moving the capitol from La Paz to Santa Cruz. The argument's that too much politics is decided in the west, while the department of Santa Cruz (only one of nine national departments) produces one third of the GNP.

Tomorrow night Sam & I pass Nochebuena (Christmas Eve) at tío Adrian's house. The typical meal involves a spitted pig, eaten just about midnight. Last time I celebrated Nochebuena at tío Adrian's house was almost 20 years ago. Should be a wonderful time.

Mmmm...a midnight feast. Sounds wonderful. And how great that you get to spend it in a fashion you haven't in so many years. Merry Christmas.
