I forgot about the fireworks

12.28.2003

I forgot about the Nochebuena fireworks. Around midnight, as the clock strikes 12, people across the city launch fireworks into the sky. It lasts about a half hour, as bottle rockets and some rather impressive colored bursts light up the sky.

Marcia & Maira, our youngest cousins (12 & 8) were excited when their dad let them buy fireworks for the night. They bought an impressive assortment for about 30 Bs. and waited impatiently for 11pm, when tío Ruben (their dad) gave them permission to light a few. Sam & I, tío Adrian's kids (Enrique & Felipe), and the abuelitos went upstairs to the terrace to enjoy the show.

At midnight, we opened a few presents, and drank a Christmas toast w/ sparkling apple cider. We were full from the lechon (the roast pig) and the Nochebuena banquet, but we still nibbled on some panettones (soft, sweet holiday breads w/ raisins & nuts). We were full & happy & content. By the time we crawled into bed, it was past 2am. Except for tío Ruben, tía Graciela, and the two girls, we stayed the night at tío Adrian's house. It was a great Nochebuena in sunny Santa Cruz.

the fireworks were great. i really miss bolivian style xmas. maybe fireworks next year in the USA. but i think all the santa cluas´might get mad if we wake the children while they are trying to sneak the gifts out of their best hiding spots.
