Last post of the year

12.31.2003

This'll be my last post of the year. Sam & I are spending eating lunch w/ tía Lilia, then heading out for tourist shopping along the Calle Sagarnaga (folk Aymara brickabrack) and Calle Linares (the Witches Market). Our New Years Eve plans are still up in the air, but it seems we might end up at a Brazilian party most of my fellow Fulbrighters are attending.

Last night, Sam & I met Daniel & Sergio at a little secret bar on 20 de Octubre called La Cofradia, where the bartender knows everyone by name and greets them warmly at the door. Paola & her cousin later joined us, then went out for a late bite at Café Ciudad. Sam went out to Mongo's w/ Martín later; I went to bed.

Yesterday we took a day trip to Oruro. The day before we went to the Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon). It's been a pretty packed vacation so far, w/ everyone vying for a piece of time. And I'm actually doing more "touristy" stuff w/ Sam than in the last four months in La Paz. But we're having a good time together (although Sam does snore something awful).

Once Sam's gone, and the New Years broohaha is over, I'll start posting more about politics again. Interesting things are in the air — it might be the (not-so-)calm before the storm.
