The cat's out of the bag

01.15.2004

I've been hoping to open a café in La Paz, along w/ some friends, for a while. Today, that became a reality. We just signed papers & bought out O Mundo Café from a French-Peruvian couple who're moving back to France. The place sits near the corner of Linares & Sagarnaga (tourist meca). It's amazing, in the same building as the Museo de Coca & Museo de Textiles. I'll post pictures soon. We officially open in a few days.

Interesting! I have a photo from that same exact building (Coca Museum) at http://tunari.tripod.com/bolivia/id22.html

Nice location.

The really bizarre thing is that I had a dream night before last (I guess the night before you signed the papers)that you owned a shop. You sold the most wonderful Bolivian candies and desserts. I specifically remember a delicious cookie perhaps with jelly. I don't remember if there was coffee involved but I think there was hot chocolate with chilis in it. Also, your brother worked there with you. Congratulations. How do you say Rocket Star in Spanish because clearly that should be the name.

That's awesome. I'll have to visit La Paz and check it out some day. Best of Luck to you guys!!
Will you serve mate?

Wi-Fi access?

Yipee... I guess Bolivia has actually begun to produce some very good coffee. The owners of my coffee shop/roastery visited Boliiva a few months ago and were quite impressed with it. I think we are going to start importing some.

Thanks! I think Meredith's dream made it come true. We were one of a small group of people interested, so we were lucky he decided yesterday to sign w/ us. Mostly, because we were honestly intending to keep it as a "cultural cafe" (something like The Space was). It currently serves as an art gallery and show space and stuff like that. We agreed to keep the name "O Mundo Café", primarily because it already has clientele, we like the name, and it's gonna appear in the next issue of Lonely Planet (so all practical reasons, really).

I'd like to serve maté, and hopefully we will. And not sure yet on Wi-Fi, though it's something I really want to have (and free, of course). And we plan on serving Irupana coffee (& other products), which is perhaps the best Bolivian coffee (and an all-organic, peasant cooperative to boot).

Congrats on the cafe!

Wow! That's great Miguel. Best wishes on cafe ownership- I can't wait to see images of the place. Will you serve food?

How far is the flight to Bolivia? Maybe I can stop in for some mate (what is that, anyway?)
