I still get to vote!

01.22.2004

Thanks to my friend Simon, I learned that Michigan has allowed internet voting for the state's Democratic primary. I've already filled out the application, which should send the information to my old Kalamazoo address, to be forwarded (let's hope) to my parents' house.

So. Mom & Dad, please open it and email me the detailed instructions I'll need for online voting (since there's no way the mail would arrive in time to Bolivia).

Also, I'm open to suggestions for who you think I should vote for. But know this. I won't vote for Dean (probably not Clark, either) and I've a strong leaning towards Lieberman. Other than that, I'm pretty open.

It's interesting that you're leaning towards Lieberman. It seems like all the other democrats I know are going for Dean. However I do give Lieberman a lot of credit. He is more of a conservative democrat, for one. And two, the way he speaks his mind even when it means going against his own party. He does support the war on Iraq and he said at an ALF-CIO debate, in front of hundreds of union members, that he is willing to try anything to improve our schools even vouchers. The crowd booed him of course, but I think that took a lot of guts. Three, he is religious and not afraid to show it, even though a lot of people in his party are trying to move away from religion in a lot of places. If I could vote in the primary I would vote for Lieberman.

I like Dean for his directness, reminds me of Carl Levin. And by his interview in People magazine, his um, cheapness sounds like a lot of things I do everyday to save money. But when it comes to the bigger issues (health care, taxes, abortion) I disagree with him a lot.

As for everyone else: Edwards is too bought out by the trial lawyers, which scares me; Kerry and Clark use their old military status a lot, but I don't agree with them on other issues; Sharpton is a joke; and Kucinich is too brash, if he went after his fellow democrats the way he did in the debates, I can only imagine how he deals with republicans.

So even from Bolivia you're getting involved in the voting process & I love it. Some people I know have opinions but don't exercise the vote(ie: Sam Centellas) Are you reading this, Sam? Oh, and Miguel, I liked your anti-marriage thoughts - spoken like a true CMU alum. Gotta be something in the Mt.Pleasant water...

Yep. I plan on voting. I can't very well tell my students to go vote if I don't, eh?

Oh, and the marriage thing's nothing to do w/ CMU. At least, I don't think so. It has to do w/ me being an Objectivist (if you've not read "Atlas Shrugged" that term will mean nothing to you) and absolutely hate Romanticism and the Romantic movement -- which pretty much just gave us nationalism and a negation of the the Enlightenment & liberal humanism (as well as some of the worst movies ever imagined).

I could very easily see myself married. But I don't fall in love w/ my heart. I fall in love w/ my brain. After all, man is a rational animal. I'm not a hairless monkey.

I don't mean to be all conspiracy theory, but even when he is doing well in the polls there is very little media attention given to him. also, did you hear about the hubbub? some rep from GR said that she would vote for one of the two christians but it didn't really matter which.

Yes, I know what you mean. Many blogger pundits have pointed out that the media has been very biased towards Dean all along (campaign contributions from media people were overwhelmingly towards him), which might help explain his defeat (his campaign was too insulated and lacked self-criticism). Likewise, the media hates Lieberman and shows clear bias against his campaign.

I don't think Lieberman will win, though polls show him improving. I just want him to gain more votes in order to push the Dem party more towards a reality-based foreign policy agenda.
