Jackpot!

02.03.2004

I may not have to spend many more hours at the Library of Congress anymore for my dissertation research. I just got off the phone w/ the friendly people at CEDIB (Centro de Documentación e Información Bolivia) in Cochabamba. They have, essentially, what CEDOIN (which no longer exists) had: category-indexed newspaper clippings.

Unfortunately, they don't have their archives indexed before 1992; those archives have to be searched manually. But. They do have resources for massive photocopies. Which means I don't have to carefully copy down entire articles word for word. I can just photocopy them, work at my own leisure (i.e. 4am) and even take them back to the US w/ me. Yes!

The immediate implications are: at least a few trips to Cochabamba (a lovely city, that) to look over the archives, relay instructions to their more-than-helpful staff, and to pick up my materials. And. They'll do the brunt work for me! I won't even have to hire "assistants" (like some of my other Fulbright fellows have done).

The long-term implications are: First, more flexible time for subject interviews (and more of them!), some of which are in Cochabamba itself (I'll try to take advantage of my trips there). Second, more time to just travel (Cuzco, here I come!). Third, more time to just enjoy life w/o the pressure of day-to-day research.

What a great day!

That has to be fantastic. I don't know what I would do without photocopy abilities for my work. I'm glad that the tediousness of your research has been minimalized in some fashion.

Though...it is fun to imagine you with an assistant.

Cochabamba. Be careful you don't fall in love with the city or someone there! Your dad and I have such fond memoriies of that quaint town and even consider retiring there!
