The world's tallest Jesus

02.15.2004

I walked about 2 km in the hot sun, constantly thinking I was almost there. Eventually, I got to the teleférico (cable car) station that goes up the hill towards the Cristo de la Concordia. Not an easy six minute ride in a tiny yellow bubble for someone w/ mild acrophobia.

But the view from above was spectacular. I circled the hill, snapping pictures of the surrounding valley. From a distance, I could just make out the Palacio Portales. I even climbed up inside the world's tallest Jesus (I really enjoy that phrase) & peeked out through the little windows.

The city's asleep on Sunday. More shops are closed than in La Paz or Santa Cruz for this time of day. I walked much of the café district, only to find one open at all. W/ not much else to do, I'm taking in a movie (Killing Me Softly), then hitting bed early. Tomorrow night I take a bus back to La Paz.

Sounds like you packed so much into a short visit. Isn't Cochabamba beautiful. How is the political climate in that city? Have wondered where you stayed. We stayed at a lovely bed and breakfast there once that was so quaint (and inexpensive). Glad you are enjoying the views of the country. It would be interesting to estimate how many miles your shoes have put in. take care.

The view from the "Cristo de la Concordia" in Cochabamba is great, the funicular trip has an amazing view indeed. When I went there, I didn't enjoy climbing up inside the Cristo since it was kind of dark and skew, worst part was the first two floors, full of dead flies (attracted by night illumination); nevertheless once you get to the top the view is great and if you are alone it's peaceful.

P.D.- Don't bother looking for Salteńas Potosinas, in Cocha you have to try salteńas "Los Castores" in El Prado. I hope you read this before you are back in La Paz.
