It's beautiful. It reminds me of St. Augustine, here in Florida. What prompted you to choose this city for Carnaval? --scott

I chose Tarija because I've always liked chapaco culture. Also, it's so different from the rest of Bolivia, I wanted to experience it during Carnaval. The people in Tarija are more "Spanish" in their traditions & culture — and their (relative) isolation from the rest of the world means they retain a flavor of Andalucia 400 years ago. People often forget just how diverse Bolivia is. I'd also like to visit Yungas, where the small Afro-Bolivian minority is concentrated and retains many of their traditions.

BTW, Tarija has a unique festival in August for San Roque, the patron saint of dogs. At the time, citizens dress up their dogs in colorful costumes and parade them through the streets of the city. Too bad I'll miss it.
