Long flight

07.06.2004

There was a flight delay in Tarija, so I didn't arrive in Santa Cruz until about 10pm. So. Relatives left waiting for me from 6:30pm at the airport. But it was nice to spot abuelito in the crowd of anxious waiters, everyone waiting for the overdue flights & tired relatives.

After a late bit of coffee & sandwiches, I slumped off to bed. Now, I'm enjoying a short trip to a cybercafé, a stroll through downtown (need a pair of flip-flops), then back to tía Lea's house to watch the opening of the Copa América on TV. Had an interesting conversation over coffee about the end of European Cup, and Greece's stunning (though boring) victory over Portugal.

Had an interesting conversation about flags last night. I'd asked about a specific flag that flew in the Tarija airport, a flag that looked like the St. Andrew's cross, red on a white field. Started a huge debate about which department's flag that was. No one seemed to know. Then there was question of what any department's flag looked like, it's colors, it's shape. Except for the Santa Cruz green-white-green, universally known in the country. Piper (Felipito) exclaimed that only in Santa Cruz do people fly their department flag con orgullo. Everyone seemed to agree.

It's winter here, but you'd never know it. Feels like July in Michigan. Just hope a sur wind doesn't pick up.

The red St. Andrew's cross is the flag of the departamento Chuqisaca. You can see all department flags on http://www.vexilla-mundi.com/bolivia.htm

A red on white diagonal cross is St Patrick's cross - http://flagspot.net/flags/ie-stpat.html

Huh, I wonder why Chuquisaca uses the St. Patrick's cross. Weird. Although, it's not actually a cross, but rather lots of red arrows going towards the center of the white field. Still.
