A visit to the office

08.10.2004

Swung by the department to discover it's been remodeled, w/ Corder settling in as the new chair. My office hasn't been assigned, but I picked up the texts I ordered for my Fall International Relations course. I should have the final syllabus hammered out by week's end. And I've also decided to view The Fog of War w/ my students. I'll work on a simple course website next week.

This afternoon. Hopefully. I'll finally get some much-needed shopping done. I need: cat litter, bathroom towels, a dish rack, a silverware tray, mustard paint & painting supplies, a trash bin, broom & dustpan, a Brita pitcher, and other whatnots.

Also, my cable/internet won't be installed until 16 August. Good job, Charter.

Hmm, so Corder is the new Dept Chair?

Any new faculty additions or losses? Tanner/Butterfield still around?

Has Ziring retired yet?

Just curious.

Oh, and the Fog of War was very interesting. Students should enjoy discussing it.

THE 16TH! Good LORD!

Sam & Andy:
Yeah, the long wait for a cable/internet connection is whack. But. I'm not at home enough these days to enjoy them. So. It works out, sort of.

Tom:
Yep, Corder's the new chair. Butterfield & Tanner are still around. Not sure if Ziring's retired yet or not. Although he's been sort of alienated by the rest of the faculty for a while now ... so he's almost retired.

Interesting. It's been about three years since I graduated, and at the time Corder was one of the most hardworking and apolitical members of the faculty, from what I could tell. Hard work pays off, I guess.

Ziring was de facto retired when I left, as well. I was lucky enough to be in his UN course when 9-11 occured. Class was cancelled for a week thereafter. When class resumed, he tended to stare off at the walls and repeat "These attacks have changed everything," "the whole system has changed," and that sort of thing. Then he'd discuss his years in Pakistan working in development. I picked out from his ramblings a few experiential jewels, but was left with the clear impression that his days of lucid professorship were numbered. Very likable and knowledgable teacher, but has approached a time when teaching's no longer feasible. So ist das leben!

To Tom and Miguel:

Tanner was on sabbatical last year and there were rumors he is not coming back, not sure what is the deal as of now, but this is what I heard before I left.
Dr. Ziring will be retiring this year (November I think).
Dr. Butterfield will be (or already is) graduate director.
