Dancing in the dark

09.15.2004

Bay Jo, Josh Upson, and Bret came over last night for dinner & cable TV watching. My fettuccine fini tossed w/ lemon & mint was a hit.

Unfortunately, the episode of NCIS we stumbled upon (it followed Jeopardy!) wasn't. There was much confusion, since we were under the impression (heard about, never seen) all CSI derivatives were hot shows. Until we realized NCIS has no bearing on CSI but was, in fact, a JAG spinnoff (which explained so much). How to best describe NCIS? Let's see. How 'bout detective drama meets 90210 meets Drew Carey Show. There was much cringing & wondering "how do these guys not get fired?" How do major networks get away w/ such crappy shows? Seems the only things worth watching these days are on cable.

After switching back over to Comedy Central, I showered & headed out for my weekly dancing fix. Stood at the bar, waving a $20 for 10 minutes before someone took my order. Let's be honest, the music's usually passable (sometimes great), but the service is unbearably tedious.

Still, last night brought a point home to me: I've lost any ability to tell whether someone's flirting w/ me or not. Is she or isn't she? Would she or wouldn't she? Seriously, I'm clueless.

RECIPE: I got the idea for mint & lemon pasta in Sucre, Bolivia. It's extremely easy.

Ingredients
1 pound fettuccine fini (or similar pasta)
¼ cup extra virgin olive oil
¼ cup lemon juice (about 2-3 large lemons)
¼ cup chopped mint leaves

Directions
Cook pasta in boiling, salted water until al dente; drain. Toss w/ the olive oil, lemon juice, mint. Serve garnished w/ sliced lemon wedges. Serves 4.

I agree w/ you on cable series. They can be (are) really good, like a good long book. The best series of today are on cable. Why the best? Just look at FX's The Shield, Nip/Tuck, HBO's Sex and the City, Six Feet Under, OZ, The Sopranos, The Wire ... Beside their entertaining value they're so good b/c of the amazing attention given to character development and to dynamics of interpersonal relationships within unexpected context. For ex., yes, NIp/Tuck can be gross, but just watch the development of characters in relationships among them. You get sucked into it. There's actually one series on the network program that looks like it was made for and it is shown on cable TV: Arrested Development on FOX. Amaziiiiiiiiiing. Second season starts November 7. Recommended. N.
