北海道

Bay kidnapped me this afternoon, as she's sometimes prone to do. So we drove to Battle Creek for dinner w/ a coworker of hers & his wife. Some extremely delicious north Japanese cuisine, interesting conversation about Benedict Anderson, and a photo slide show that suggested Hokkaido looks remarkably like Wisconsin.

Now. After two long days. Off to bed.

There's only one sushi restaurant in Battle Creek. I visited it once, and thought the sushi was good. Later, I visited Japan and has high-priced sushi. I've had sushi at various locations along the west coast. Quickly realized that Battle Creek sushi isn't that good, but when it's your only basis of comparison ...

When you can, visit Japan and eat some good sushi. Will dazzle your taste buds.

Oh, no, we didn't go to a restaurant. The couple we visited are American (husband) & Japanese (wife); we ate at their home, w/ some freshly prepared Hokkaido dishes (she's from Sapporo). The photo slide show was pictures of them during a Summer around Hokkaido.

The reason I suggest Hokkaido looks like Wisconsin (or the American midwest in general) is the vast green forests, farmlands, and ranches. The kitsch tourist traps, such as giant lobster claws on the side of the road. The backyard barbecue w/ fireworks. And the county-fair-looking summer carnival, complete w/ carnie games, corndogs (although fish-meat corndogs), and never-ending supplies of ice cream.
