Little joys/ironies

01.26.2005

Actually had visitors to my office hours today, which is always nice. And it wasn't just the Thomson publishing rep who comes by once in a blue moon, calling me "Professor Centellas" (which always sounds funny), pushing his books.

Felt like 105 went much better today, and I think they enjoyed the little "find the thesis" question on the quiz. Here it is. Can YOU find the thesis?

Then, then, there was the world premiere of the new U2 video. Who is letting these guys still be famous? Are you buying their albums? If so, please stop encouraging them. I will admit that I have a weakness for that one song. You know the one that goes, "If you want to kiss the sky, you better learn how to kneel. On your knees, boy." But, that is the exception that proves the rule. What I really want to know is how they became so integral to the American experience. The SuperBowl of Football in 2002, then more recently at the opening of the Clinton Library, and now their freaking video world premieres during the SuperBowl of College Football? Plus, their video was a total rip off of vastly superior video for Big Time Sensuality. I guess they weren't counting on anyone in the audience remembering a nearly 12 year old video (How is this possible? 12 years?) by our Icelandic friend.

To give proper credit, btw, the above's an excerpt from this blog I stumbled upon. I was actually googling for something w/ an "Ahsley Simpson is a talentless hack" thesis, but really enjoyed the above paragraph.

Also, as an added bonus, the LOTR:3 DVD shipped to my office was finally delivered to me today. Five weeks after it was received by campus mail. One week after I ordered another copy sent to my house. Does anyone want a LOTR:3 DVD? It's the deluxe 4-disk edition.

OK. Chapter 1 of my dissertation (or some reasonable draft) is due Monday (self-imposed deadline, but still, I promised my committee they'd get it Monday). Good timing, too, since I just completely changed all my hypotheses & research model (for the better, I believe) last week. I look forward to a very fun weekend.

I've not eaten anything but donuts & coffee all day. Time for dinner?

I would love ROTK, love it.

Up here in the mountain, there is little to do and with my reading of the books right now, that would be awesome. I was actually planning on renting the entire extended trilogy while I was home and watching them during downtime. Oh man, I couldn't type this message fast enough, I was so excited.
