We're back!

Discovery took off. American manned space flight is again a reality. Fantastic. Now I wanna see another space race. I wanna see us humans push ourselves across another frontier, to bring the number of planetoids we've walked on to three.

Does anyone doubt we can do it? Will it be easy? I certainly hope not. I want it to be tough, I want it to be a longshot that makes victory all that much sweater. And I want a race. Japan? China? Europe? Private investors conglomerate? Just someone please saddle up.

Yes, it was very cool--I took some time off from work to watch it. It's been awhile since I've seen a shuttle launch.

I really hope somebody gets their act together to get back into space. The only depressing thing about the shuttle launch was knowing the program is being retired (rightfully so) in 2010. Unless some very big pockets start planning the next stage of space exploration very soon there could be a large time lag from the last space shuttle flight to the next version of manned space flight.

Especially since world manned space technology is basically at the 1970s--the decade the shuttle was designed. Unmanned space technology has really taken off with the Spirit and Opportunity missions, but nothing gets more attention and money than a man/woman going out into the great unknown of space.

In a related note, you should check out PlanetQuest(http://www.planetquest.org/)--it's a new organization being setup in the SETI model. However, instead of looking for ET PlanetQuest will be looking for planets(using the new "star-wobble" method) through a distributed computing system. And each member whose computer finds a planet will get to name that planet.

Who knows maybe someday people will go to the Planet Centellas...
