Election updates (FYI)

09.30.2005

Technorati tag:

I haven't updated my Bolivian politics wiki for the December elections for two simple reasons: One, there's still a very real chance that there won't be elections (though I think this is unlikely). Two, the official deadline for final candidate lists is 4 October (lists are still being adjusted w/ candidates stepping down & being replaced) and the day parties/candidates can officially begin campaigning.

The debate over how to redistribute seats in lieu of the Constitutional Tribunal's decision to use the 2001 census could still be resolved by that time; several parties are already working on adjusting their candidate lists for this purpose even as some departmental electoral courts (CDEs) are already redistricting.

I'm going to hold off (unless something really major happens) on any more Bolivian election updates until the campaign period (60 days) officially begins — for the above reasons.

ADDENDUM: Why do I think the early election won't be rescinded by the Constitutional Tribunal? Because the constitution does, indeed, state (in Article 93) that if the president of the Supreme Court takes the presidency (he's last in the line of succession), he's required to call elections w/in 180 days (which is exactly what he did).

NOTE: There's also a really good roundup of various Bolivia-themed blogs at Harvard's Global Voices Online project.
