Holidays part 2

01.05.2006

I didn't really post much during the holidays, what w/ being busy doing holiday stuff. But a quick roundup of the Chicago holiday experience.

After Centellas Family Christmas '05, we drove back to Kalamazoo. I checked on Annie & Sophie, dropped off K8 at her day spa appointment, and the next day we were headed out to Chicago.

Spent the actual Christmas holiday w/ K8's family in a Chicago suburb. I was wined & dined, and even attended a Christmas Eve party where people were wearing ascots. I also played a two-on-two game of basketball — my first in about ten years (my team lost).

K8 got me two gifts. A biography of Cicero (Cicero, by Anthony Everitt), which I just finished reading last night. It's pretty good. The other gift was hands down the coolest gift I got this year: An 1830 Bolivian coin.

After the Christmas holidays, we drove back to Kalamazoo, again. This time we were catching up w/ friends like J. Edmund (in from Boston), Brett (in from San Francisco), and newlyweds Micah & Chaleen (in from Indiana). There was a great Freezoween party at Dan & Emily's new house, w/ some fantastic costumes.

There was a brief scare the night before we left, as Sophie started throwing up for almost a whole day straight. But it turns out she just didn't like her new catfood, and she's in good spirits again.

On Tuesday, I drove K8 back home to Chicago. J. Edmund came along, too, on his way to the airport. It was nice to chat w/ him on the drive. But I don't think I'll cram three adults into a two-seat pickup truck (w/ manual trans) ever again.

And that, basically, was the holiday. It was very relaxing & lazy. K8 & I did some work on our dissertations here/there, but mostly we just caught up on movies & television. We also cooked up a storm, trying new recipes, and using my new crock pot. Or played dominos (K8 learned how to play & became undefeated champion, all in one day).

sorry I am just now reading your blog after probably two weeks. Got home from our trip with computer problems - so dad went out and bought a new laptop and I am finally using it. Your holiday sounds great.I will read your comments on Evo later. It has been pretty negative in the news - what little there is - here. Of course you must expect that being the position he seems to be taking and since his first trip was to Cuba. I'lll write more later.
