Bits of good news

04.24.2006

So the good news I promised to announce after the MPSA conference is confirmed. In order of when they happened: First, I accepted a faculty position at Dickinson College. Second, K8 & I are getting married. That's her last Fall in Michigan's Manistee National Forest.

Although it's not tenure track (it's a two-year position), I'm excited about starting my post-WMU career at such a respected liberal arts college. Seriously. I'm floored. I'll be temporarily replacing their Latin Americanist, so I'll get to teach a lot of different Latin American politics courses. Next spring I'm going to teach a special topics course on Latin American populism that I'm designing (I was going to teach it this Fall, but by the time we had a title for the course, it was under-enrolled so it was pushed back to the next semester). Bottom line is I'm excited to move to Carlisle, PA to start the next stage of my life.

Especially since I'll be married. And before the end of this year! Now we just have to figure out how to find an apartment that will support four (yes, four) cats (two are mine, two are hers).

I have to focus this next week towards finishing a (near) final draft of my dissertation to send to all my committee members. Soon after, I'd like to turn my MPSA paper into a (stronger) journal article to send out to some theory-oriented journals. It seemed well received at my panel, even if there was excited debate about Anderson's conception of the use of historical narratives in national imaginaries. A relative shift from my traditional historical-institutianalist stuff (which I still do, btw).

If all goes well, I'll defend my dissertation in a few weeks, finish up my syllabi for next semester, have most of the wedding plans squared away (at least my share of responsibility) in time to sit down for a month in front of ESPN to watch the 2006 World Cup.

Miguel:
As Victor Hugo once said: "El amor abre el paréntesis, el matrimonio lo cierra."

Congratulations and best wishes, both for your new job and your soon to be new life. I also wish you much happiness in your marriage. These are three things which are not very easy to achieve now a days in a short period of time. It seems to me the gods are smiling at you. :-) Keep smiling back! :-)

These are more than just "bits" of good news. Many congrats to you and the lovely K8!

Dickinson's a great school, and a lovely campus. If it's still around, there's a White Mountain right off campus that has life-sustaining ice cream.
